Any ROI On Social Media?
May 5, 2008 | | 1 Comment
Marketers are having trouble figuring out if there is any ROI on their involvement in social media. PR people don’t have that problem. We always have understood the value of dialogue, of listening to our customers, reacting and and responding. There’s a nice guest post over at our sister site, THINKing, by DJ Francis from the OnlineMarketerBlog about social media ROI. You should check it out.

OK, this is my annual rant on you advertising, PR and marketing students who insist upon mass marketing your resumes. Did you learn nothing in school? We are living in a one-to-one world. So, your job search requires target marketing.
Read this and this. And, DO NOT send me your resume, particularly addressed To Whom It May Concern.

What’s A Reputation Worth?
March 18, 2008 | | 2 Comments
Ask Eliot Spitzer about the worth of a good reputation and he’d probably tell you that it is priceless. Spitzer, a longtime prosecutor who aggressively pursued big business and prostitution rings, has proof positive that years of building a reputation can be destroyed in nanoseconds.
We’ve discussed this here and here at our sister blog, THINKing (subscribe here).
Politicians never learn. If you are going to build your reputation as a tough pursuer of wrongdoers, then you have to keep your own nose clean. Power corrupts, as they say, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Spitzer got the headlines and the rep as a straight arrow, but apparently began to believe his own hype, and that he was above the law.
Some would say his downfall is karma because in his zeal, he ruined the lives of a number of business executives who weren’t guilty. I say that this was self-inflicted reputation suicide.

The Rule of Reciprocity on Steroids
February 26, 2008 | Tagged , focus forty, focus four, linkedin.com, networking | 1 Comment
While reading Maki’s article on the smart way to get traffic, I saw the link on the rule of reciprocity. When you think about it, much of what we PR people do is based upon this rule. Do something for someone else and they will turn around and do something of equal or greater value for you.
I’ve written about this before at our sister site in a series of posts about networking and gaining new business.
Friend Brent Dees owns Focus Four, a three-year curriculum to teach business owners how to work on their business and not in their business. In the Focus Four class, Brent teaches you how to utilize this rule most effectively. Says Brent,
“you should identify the people who can do the most to assist you in reaching your personal and business goals and then find out what they are trying to achieve. Once you know this, your efforts should be directed toward helping them reach their goals. This is smart business and good public relations”
Remember, you do it because you want to help them. Expect nothing in return from them. But guess what? They always return the favor a hundredfold. That’s how to put reciprocity on steroids.
