Well, the media is having a “newsgasm” now thanks to Tookie Williams, the brutal murdering co-founder of the Crips gang. Williams is on death row and the left leaning left coast has made him its cause celebre.
This is one of the best PR operations I’ve seen in a long time. You take a liberal cause - the death penalty - sprinkle in celebrities, add a minority on death row, give him a website and a willing media goes into paroxysms of pleasure. Chief celebrity whiner, Mike Farrell of MASH fame, says Tookie has made “an extradordinary transformation.”
As you may know, there is no quicker way for a person to find religion than to place him on death row. Tookie has joined the Nation of Islam, and denies the four 1979 murders of which he was convicted. He has written books to help turn teens against the gang life and violence. And, get this, he has been mentioned as a Nobel Peace Prize candidate.
What about all the people he has been directly and indirectly responsible for killing? You can’t find a news story anywhere in the past few days that even mentions the victims’ names. He was convicted of killing Yen-I-Yang, 65, his wife, Tsai-Shai Chen Yang, 62, and their daughter Yu-Chin Yang Lin, 42. Eleven days prior to killing the Taiwanese family Tookie forced Albert Lee Owens to kneel in a convenience store stockroom and then shot him in the back with a 12-gauge shotgun. No celebrities have come forward to speak for the dead.
The media attention focused on Tookie by Hollywood may actually convince Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to give him clemency. A PR victory? You decide.
