Cold Hard Facts On Writing A Book

December 11, 2007 | |

Thinking of writing a book? Many people do to build their brand and their credibility and to showcase their expertise, as Seth Godin points out. If that is the reason you are writing, you don’t need to read any further. If you want to make millions off your book sales, read on.

I don’t want to discourage you, because you may be the next Thomas Wolfe. But I do want to give you the facts.

Wife, Terry, published her first book, Double Dead, in January 2007. She just sent me this information about how few books are successful.

Why is it so darn hard to get published? Every year, 190,000 new books are published. According to a 2004 report, Nielsen Bookscan (the source for book sales info) tracked the sales of 1.2 million books and found:

950,000 sold fewer than 99 copies

Another 200,000 sold fewer than 1000 copies

Only 25,000 sold more than 5000 copies

Fewer than 500 sold more than 100,000 copies

10 books sold more than 1 million copies

the average book sold 500 copies
